Website vs. Telegram Bot vs. WhatsApp Business: Where Should Customers Go to Place an Order or Get a Consultation?

24.08.2026 Author: Victor Condratiuc, Founder of iLab.md

In short

This isn’t an either-or decision. A website, a Telegram bot, and WhatsApp Business serve different purposes and, in most cases, work best together rather than replacing one another. What matters even more than the channel itself is how quickly a business responds. According to Lead Connect, 78% of customers buy from the company that responds first, while responding within 5 minutes makes a lead 21 times more likely to qualify compared with waiting 30 minutes. At the same time, the average business takes 47 hours to respond to an inquiry. The Telegram Bot API is free for developers — you only pay for the actual bot development (starting from €100 for a basic bot that can accept orders). WhatsApp works differently. The free WhatsApp Business app is suitable for handling customer conversations manually. However, from October 1, 2026, WhatsApp Business Platform — the version designed for automation, API access, and CRM integration — switched to charging for each individual message rather than primarily charging for opening a conversation, as before. Access to the platform also goes through a Business Solution Provider (BSP), which may charge its own fees. Choosing between Telegram and WhatsApp shouldn’t be based on demographics. The more useful question is where your customers already prefer to contact you. If most inquiries come through Instagram or Facebook, WhatsApp is usually the more natural fit because it’s part of the same Meta ecosystem. If your business already has an active Telegram channel or group, building a bot there makes more sense.

Three channels with different roles — not three versions of the same thing

  • Website — your foundation for credibility and online visibility: portfolio, pricing, terms, and forms for more complex inquiries that may include files and additional details. It’s also the type of public content that AI search tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity can reference, and it helps people discover your business before they know anything about it. Bots and private messenger conversations can’t serve this purpose because their content isn’t publicly searchable.
  • Telegram bot — ideal for quick orders, checking request or order status, sending notifications, and accepting payments directly within the conversation. It’s especially useful if your business already has a Telegram channel, group, or active community.
  • WhatsApp Business — serves a similar purpose for customers who already interact with your business through Instagram or Facebook. As part of the Meta ecosystem, WhatsApp fits more naturally into this customer journey than Telegram.

How much each channel costs and what you need

1. A website remains essential, even if most inquiries move to messaging apps

Neither Telegram bots nor WhatsApp conversations are indexed by search engines or directly referenced in AI-generated search results — they’re private conversations, not public web pages. Of the three channels, a website is the only one that can answer a potential customer’s or AI search engine’s query before that person contacts your business. It helps people find you through search, view your prices and portfolio, and get answers to common questions before they ever need to send a message. Messaging apps take over later, once someone has already decided to get in touch and wants a quick response. That’s why website development remains the foundation of a business’s online presence, with messaging and automation channels built around it.

2. The Telegram Bot API is free, but developing a bot isn’t

Telegram’s API is free for both users and developers, and the platform already has more than 10 million bots. A bot can accept payments through Telegram Stars for digital products and connect to third-party payment systems for physical goods. It can also use inline buttons and Mini Apps — JavaScript-based mini applications that run directly inside Telegram — and operate in groups and channels. The cost comes from development. A basic bot for accepting orders and sending status notifications starts at €100. CRM integration with systems such as Kommo is a separate development task, and we’ve covered the costs of this type of solution in our article on integrations.

3. WhatsApp Business App and WhatsApp Business Platform — two solutions that are often confused

The free WhatsApp Business app is suitable for small businesses that handle customer conversations manually from one or more devices. However, it doesn’t provide the same level of automation and CRM integration as the platform designed for larger-scale business use. WhatsApp Business Platform (formerly the WhatsApp Business API) is designed for automation, bots, and CRM integrations. Access is provided through a Business Solution Provider (BSP), which may charge its own subscription or service fees on top of Meta’s pricing. From October 1, 2026, Meta moved to charging for each individual message — including marketing, utility, authentication, and other message categories — rather than the previous model based primarily on opening a 24-hour conversation window. As a result, businesses with high volumes of active customer communication may pay more than under the previous pricing model. Both options — the free app and the paid platform — can operate at the same time using Coexistence mode. Our integration of a website or CRM with WhatsApp Business Platform starts at €300, excluding the provider’s recurring fees and messaging charges. Those costs are paid to Meta and the BSP, not to us.

4. Response time matters more than the channel you choose

82% of customers expect an immediate response, and companies that respond in under 5 minutes achieve 8 times more conversions than businesses that take 5–24 hours to reply. At the same time, 58% of companies don’t respond to website inquiries at all, while up to 71% of online leads are lost because of slow response times rather than product quality or price. Simply adding a Telegram or WhatsApp bot won’t solve the problem if there’s no effective automation or real person ready to step in when needed. Common questions — such as pricing, business hours, and order status — should be answered instantly. More complex inquiries should be handed over to a manager as quickly as possible rather than sitting in a queue.

5. How to choose between Telegram and WhatsApp in practice

The decision should be based on your own business data, not assumptions about your audience’s age or demographics. The key question is simple: where are your customers already messaging you, and which channel currently generates the most inquiries? If most of your leads come from Instagram or Facebook, WhatsApp is generally the more natural choice because it belongs to the same Meta ecosystem. Customers can continue the conversation in a familiar environment without being pushed onto a completely different platform. If your business already has a Telegram channel, group, or community, it makes more sense to develop a bot where you already have an active audience. And if there’s no clear winner and inquiries come from a mix of channels, offering both is a practical option. Development costs increase accordingly — a separate bot plus a separate integration — but you don’t need to rebuild your website or backend from scratch.

How we do it

At ilab.md, we can connect a Telegram bot or WhatsApp Business Platform directly to the same PHP/CodeIgniter backend that powers your website. This means inquiries from Telegram, WhatsApp, and your website all flow into the same system instead of being scattered across separate, isolated channels. At the same time, we don’t see a website as something that can simply be replaced by a messaging app. Even if a customer eventually communicates with your business entirely through a Telegram bot, the website still plays an important role at the discovery stage: it helps people find your business and gives search engines and AI-powered tools public content they can index and reference. Meta’s fees and pricing, as well as Telegram Stars limits, are set directly by the platforms and aren’t charges from us. Our job is to make sure the integration works reliably and sends data where your business actually needs it — whether that’s a CRM, 1C, or an internal system.

What should I choose — a website, a Telegram bot, or WhatsApp Business?

These options aren't mutually exclusive: a website helps with discoverability and trust (including visibility in AI search), while a messenger is better for quick communication with customers who are already interested. Choosing between Telegram and WhatsApp depends not on the audience's language, but on where customers already communicate with the business. WhatsApp is more convenient if inquiries already come through Instagram/Facebook, while Telegram makes more sense if the business already has a channel or chat there.

How much does it cost to build a Telegram bot for a business?

The Telegram Bot API itself is free. You only pay for development — starting from €500 for a basic bot that can accept orders and send status notifications. CRM integration is a separate task.

Is it true that WhatsApp Business became more expensive in 2026?

Yes, for the automated version (WhatsApp Business Platform): starting October 1, 2026, Meta introduced per-message charges instead of charging only for opening a conversation. The free WhatsApp Business app for manual messaging without automation remains free.

Can I simply use a bot instead of a website?

No. Bots and messenger conversations aren't indexed by search engines or cited in AI-generated answers because they're closed channels. Without a website, a business is much harder to discover for people who don't already know about it and haven't contacted it first.

After a website redesign, traffic is often lost for the same reason: the URL structure changes without proper 301 redirects. As a result, Google can no longer find the old pages and has to crawl and index the new ones from scratch.
